In March 2026, a two-day-old newborn diagnosed with esophageal atresia a rare congenital defect in which the esophagus ends in a closed pouch underwent emergency surgical repair inside the fortified Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Laniado Hospital. Given the clinical complexity and the ongoing security situation, the team elected to perform the entire procedure within the protected unit.
The procedure was carried out in collaboration with a senior surgical team from Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel. Dr. Aryeh Simmonds, Director of the NICU, led the Laniado neonatology contingent alongside the Head of Anesthesia, the Director of Pediatric Pulmonology, and an extensive nursing team. Home Front Command alerts sounded during the operation; the team, operating within the fortified NICU, continued without interruption. The surgery was completed successfully.
